THE BERRYLANDS APPROACH
Connection before curriculum
At Berrylands School, we believe young people learn best when they feel safe, understood and connected.
Understanding comes first
We recognise that behaviour can be a form of communication. Many of our young people have experienced significant challenges in education and may struggle with emotional regulation, trust, relationships or engagement. We take time to understand the individual and respond to their needs while maintaining clear expectations and boundaries. Understanding behaviour does not mean accepting unsafe behaviour.

Relationships are the foundation
Our approach is trauma-informed, relational and restorative. We develop trust through consistency, patience, predictable routines and emotionally available adults. We recognise the importance of repairing relationships, developing emotional regulation and helping young people take increasing responsibility for their choices.

Trust
Consistency and patience form the bedrock of the trust we build with every student.

Safety
Providing predictable routines and emotionally available adults to ensure physical and emotional safety.

Repair
Using restorative practice to mend relationships and encourage accountability after challenges.

Growth
Supporting young people to take increasing responsibility for their choices and future aspirations.
Ready
We support young people to develop the emotional and practical readiness to participate in learning.
Respectful
We encourage kindness, understanding and respect for ourselves, others and the natural environment.
Responsible
We help young people understand their choices, recognise their impact and develop independence.
Nature is part of our classroom
Our woodland environment provides opportunities for exploration, movement, creativity, collaboration and practical learning. Activities including woodworking, gardening, outdoor cooking and environmental projects help young people develop confidence, resilience and responsibility. Outdoor learning complements structured academic teaching and is supported by appropriate risk assessment and supervision.

Individual Pathways
Different starting points
Shared ambition
Every young person follows a personalised educational pathway informed by their needs, strengths and aspirations. We combine academic teaching with opportunities for social and emotional development.
Our curriculum includes English, mathematics, practical learning, AQA Unit Awards, Functional Skills and GCSE opportunities where appropriate. Our approach is flexible, but our educational ambitions remain high.
Progress is more than a number
Progress is monitored through individual plans, assessments, observations and regular reviews.
Belonging
Feeling safe and connected within our school community and environment.
Engagement
Participating meaningfully in learning activities and the wider school life.
Relationships
Developing trust, collaborative communication, and secure social bonds.
Emotional regulation
Recognising and managing emotions more safely and effectively over time.
Academic achievement
Building knowledge, practical skills, and achieving formal qualifications.
Independence
Developing responsibility and preparing for a confident transition to the future.
Compassion and clear boundaries go together
A trauma-informed approach does not mean an absence of expectations. Safety and wellbeing are fundamental at Berrylands. We use clear boundaries, de-escalation, relational support and restorative practice wherever appropriate. Serious incidents require proportionate and decisive responses informed by safeguarding responsibilities, risk assessments and professional judgement. Our aim is to help young people manage challenges more safely while protecting the wider school community.
Partnership makes progress possible
We work collaboratively with families, local authorities, educational psychologists, health professionals and other relevant services. Shared expectations, respectful communication and professional cooperation help us understand young people's needs and support meaningful progress.
